Synopsis
Coureurs de Bois recounts the impudent odyssey of William Tobe, an Ottawa-born economics grad, who moves to Toronto and falls under the spell of the recently paroled Randall Cobb Seymour. "The Cobb" is a vengefully shrewd and charismatic Native Canadian — part Mohawk, part Ojibway — the embodiment of the trickster and a powerfully animated personality of cunning, gall, and uninhibited entrepreneurial instincts. He is hell-bent on beating the white man at his own dirty game and, in doing so, he masters what he calls "the Queen's economy." Good-hearted Will not only becomes involved in Cobb's scams, but finds himself swept up in his own evolving, urban vision quest.Preview

Reviews
"Coureurs de Bois is nothing if not fun ... The writing is crisp, the plotting as simple and subversive as a pack of cigarettes, and the whole thing is just smart and seditious."
- The Sun Times
"Coureurs de Bois is an energetic, quirky novel of ideas ... loads of fun ... I sense that [Bruce MacDonald] had great fun writing this novel, and it shows."
- Vancouver Sun
"MacDonald shows skill in balancing his various characters, motifs and tones."
- The Toronto Star
"This novel is an extemely engaging read, both funny and thoughtful. I would definitely recommend it to some girl I was trying to sleep with by demonstrating my good taste in books."
- Broken Pencil
"We come to appreciate the bizarre characters very much, eve to identify with them, such is the competence of the writing. The journalistically trained MacDonald is straightforward, presenting an unflinching read, like a straight man to the wildly comic partner that is life ... for those who don't mind it a bit rough, Coureurs de Bois is a great find."
- Town Crier
"Coureurs de Bois is crisp and quick moving. MacDonald handles urban texture well."
- Quill and Quire
